To Get To Galena, Alaska
There are two airlines that fly Fairbanks to Galena and they are Frontier, (907)474-0014 and Warbelow's (907)474-0518. A $10.00 taxi fee from the main terminal on the west side of the Fairbanks airport will get you to the east side where Warbelow's is located. Plan on having one hour from the time you land in Fairbanks until check in time at the air carriers office. Frontier is now located at the main terminal. Call them for further information. Either way the ride is about one and a half hours to Galena.
The Weather
The month of May is usually a time of pleasant, warm sunny days in the 40 to 60 degree range where a heavy shirt, light jacket, and a ball cap may be enough while hiking. On chilly nights and overcast breezy days a heavy coat, cotton gloves, wool cap and long under wear may be needed. From June through the first week of September a sweater, wool cap, cotton gloves and rain gear may be needed for those windy, overcast and rainy days, otherwise normal summer wear for temperatures ranging from the mid 50's to 80 degrees is sufficient. During this time not enough can be said about having enough bug repellent along, as well as netted bug hats. From mid September through October expect temperatures below freezing all day and perhaps to as low as 0 degrees at nights. Sorrel style boots, long under wear and heavy clothing are a must. November through March temperatures regularly go down to -50 degrees. They have gone as low as -88 degrees.
Hunting Clothing
Wear normal street clothes to Galena. You can change and leave those clothes in Galena. For spring and fall hunting one heavy set of hunting clothes is recommended. That includes a wool cap, heavy coat, heavy shirt, gloves and socks. And insulated pair of boots, leather or the Sorrel type for camp is best. In nearly all areas hip boots are mandatory, either insulated or with heavy socks. Hip boots or at least rubber knee boots are needed for all float trips summer or fall if you want dry feet. Besides one set of heavy clothing, an extra set of long underwear is recommended in case one becomes wet. Also one pair of tennis socks and one pair of wool socks, one regular tee shirt and shorts, and one pair of cotton gloves for each day you plan to be in the field will help keep you comfortable.
Personal Equipment
Besides prescription medicines, aspirin, cold medicines, band aids, Vaseline etc. will help with minor cuts and scrapes. A small first aid kit with some personal additions is recommended. People often forget to bring flashlights and extra batteries. A person should carry while hunting or hiking in their pocket or a small backpack, a signal mirror, waterproof match case and strike anywhere matches, a folding knife, whistle, easy fire starter material, light weight gloves is a zip lock bag, and one of the pocket size space blankets.
Hunting Equipment
Besides the above equipment I personally recommend a backpack to pack meat and carry a small thermos, Montana style folding saw, hank of rope, camera, binoculars etc. I like to carry my licenses, tags and hunting regulations in a zip lock bag in the pack with me.
Camp Equipment
Along with a tent I like a tarp, space blanket and mat under my sleeping bag. This combo keeps me warm and dry. For a float trip or short duration camp (6 to 7 days) a single burner stove, a large pot to boil water, a plastic bowl, cup, silverware, a scrubby and dish soap. For food I like the new eat in the box M.R.E.'s, three per day is enough along with some trail foods like jerky and candy for snacks. These are fast and easy when you are tired plus no one gets stuck doing dishes!
Shipping Gear
For easier, cheaper travel it is easier to mail most of your gear ahead. When using the U.S. mail service, send at least 30 days in advance. If you use the U.P.S. service, use 10 days as the minimum. Along with Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, next day and even three day mail is a fantasy in Galena.
Shipping Antlers
All airlines and Cargo lines take advantage of sportsman by charging outrages prices for antlers either shipped as freight or taken as baggage. Unless your antlers are of trophy book size you loose nothing by cutting them through the skull, you will however, gain a tremendous saving in shipping. Many trophies are mounted these days with antlers that can be removed from the head simply for easy moving. You might talk to a taxidermist about this if it causes you heart burn just to think about it.
